Pela primeira vez na hist\u00f3ria foi registrada uma chuva intermitente no ponto mais alto do manto de gelo da\u00a0Groenl\u00e2ndia<\/strong>. A \u00e1rea fica 3.216 metros acima do n\u00edvel do mar e a chuva caiu por 13 horas seguidas, no dia 14 de agosto. As temperaturas tamb\u00e9m chamaram a aten\u00e7\u00e3o, permanecendo acima de zero por cerca de nove horas. O relato vem da Esta\u00e7\u00e3o Summit, da National Science Foundation<\/a>, que monitora o clima do \u00c1rtico e as mudan\u00e7as no gelo e tem funcionado o ano todo desde 1989.<\/p>\n

De acordo com o Centro Nacional de Dados sobre Neve e Gelo dos EUA, n\u00e3o h\u00e1 registros de chuvas anteriores nesse local. Essa \u00e9\u00a0 a terceira vez, em menos de uma d\u00e9cada, em que a temperatura ficou acima do ponto de congelamento da \u00e1gua. E a precipita\u00e7\u00e3o envolveu neve \u00famida. Os eventos anteriores ocorreram em 2012 e 2019.<\/p>\n

Temperaturas na Groenl\u00e2ndia<\/h2>\n

As temperaturas excepcionais foram acompanhadas pelo n\u00edvel de chuva sem precedentes. Cientistas estimam que em um dia a Groenl\u00e2ndia recebeu cerca de 7 bilh\u00f5es de toneladas de \u00e1gua, o que representa cerca de um quarto do que \u00e9 esperado para todo o ano. N\u00e3o est\u00e1 claro quanto caiu no pico mais alto. Segundo reportagem publicada no jornal\u00a0The Washignton Post<\/a>, como isso nunca aconteceu antes, a esta\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o estava equipada com pluvi\u00f4metro.<\/p>\n

Os relat\u00f3rios apontam, no entanto, que a chuva pode ter um efeito importante no manto de gelo, contribuindo para o seu degelo. A extens\u00e3o do derretimento no dia 14 de agosto atingiu um pico de 872.000 quil\u00f4metros quadrados, retornando a n\u00edveis moderados apenas em 16 de agosto.<\/p>\n

\u201cNa maior parte do manto de gelo, a \u00e1gua derretida (ou a chuva que fica nas partes superiores da camada de gelo) se infiltra na neve e volta a congelar; no entanto, em \u00e1reas com gelo nu e com neve saturada de \u00e1gua, perto da costa, a \u00e1gua derretida (e a chuva) \u00e9 escoada, resultando na perda de massa do manto de gelo\u201d, explicam os cientistas do Centro Nacional de Dados sobre Neve e Gelo dos Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n

O Centro ainda alerta que\u00a0 em 15 de agosto de 2021, a massa superficial perdida foi sete vezes acima da m\u00e9dia do per\u00edodo e que neste ponto da temporada, as grandes \u00e1reas de gelo descoberto que existem ao longo de grande parte das \u00e1reas costeiras do sudoeste e do norte n\u00e3o tem capacidade de absorver o derretimento ou a chuva. Portanto, a \u00e1gua acumulada na superf\u00edcie flui morro abaixo e, eventualmente, chega ao oceano.<\/p>\n
